I picked up this book uppon a recommendation from a family friend. She, as a lover of detective stories recommended me this author when I mentioned I really liked when there was folklore and mythology implemented into the stories. What surprised me is that this is my home country author I've never heard of before.

Still synopsis tells me it might be quite interesting. Yet I didn't pick it, for myself as I wanted to thank my tutor on my work practice where I spent a total of 3 weeks over my student years. She taught me many things and as we were talking I found out what books she liked. The only thing I worry is that she wouldn't like it or already has the book at home, but let's hope she doesn't ;).

Anyway it is about two males Captain Stein and Barbarič (who is a Commissioner of Oaths) who are trying to solve crimes that often go to history. It is a first book of a 4 book series. It's set in area of the 16th century Slovakia (which by the way wasn't even existing in that time because we were occupied by Hungarians). Also I've heard that there might be mentioned the Turkish invasion which did happen in our history. 

Let's see how it goes. I couldn't hold back and read the first few lines and it's starting  rather bloody. It's descirbing the place of a fight. The book is rather thin so I think it will be a quick read compared to the 400 paged giants I have borrowed from my friend. The fact it's in my mother tongue makes it a tad easier to read and I can move through the pages quicker.

Essay - Ebooks vs physical books

I got a writing assignment from English class: Write an essay.  So I decided to collide it together with my book addiction and blog. I know I'm not active this month, but the books I have picked aren't that appealing.

"Since the introduction of E-books to the market, there had always been the question, whether they are really better than the physical books. There are countless discussions on that topic and many say that they might replace the actual books. 

The reasons as to why are very simple. Once you buy any e-reader, you pay for the device once and not that much in comparison for buying physical books constantly. Not only it saves the space in your apartment, it saves your money. E-books are usually at least 50 percent cheaper.

Have you ever considered taking books with you on a holiday? And I can bet that you have encountered a problem called heavy books. Physical copies are much heavier than a single e-reader, which you could take basically everywhere. Small, compact and capable of bearing up to one thousand books. This way you do not need another bag for books, nor does your back suffer from the weight.

The only possible disadvantage might be, that you do not feel a physical copy in your hands, the thrill of turning pages. And the fact that you cannot show off your shelves of books to your friends.

Yet, it is true that e-books save the nature. We do not need to cut down trees for one book, but even though the electronic books are taking over, there always will be a certain charm to owning a small bookshelf in your house. Like Cicero had said: “A room without books is like a body without a soul.”

November Wrap-up

Currently sitting in class so  this will be short. Xp. Don't kill me for that I have no time really. School is getting the best of me. I'm lucky that I have time to read, which isn't going as fast as i would love to.

The third book I've read this month is Around the world in 80 days by Jules Verne. The review on it will be soon up, I'm having just last few pages to go. It is going too slow and I can tell that  it won't be having more than 3 stars from me!

Just as the first book, this was sent to me in an ARC, sort of... And I have to admit I wasn't disappointed.  It is a short novella about one of the main characters in the first book The Guardian, a Sword and Stilettos, Sidelle. The summer fairy. I did notice the reference to her past in the first book and I was curious of what had happened. This book satisfied my needs, because it describes the life of Lady of the Summer, which Sidelle is, and all of  her adventures since her childhood. How she managed to slip into the world of Ordinaries, how she got involved with the angels and with seeking the Redeemer.

Throughout the book you can notice the way she had developed from a naive fairy to a strong member of royal family after one single event, that changed her life entirely. The affair that was going on between her and the Winter fairy, kind of reminded me of the story of Romeo and Juliet, yet it was a neat adaptation with far much better ending.

October WrapUp & November BOokhaul

A month has passed and sadly I haven't read much! (damn it school, just damn it) Or maybe I shouldn't blame school for that...Yeah I shouldn't if I wanted I could surely quit reading fanfictions and get to my books OR stop playing the goddamn PC games (no they are not, pc games are amazing <3). aaaand yeah also have a roleplay blog on tumblr, taking most of my times. 

Alright  let me stop complaining and making up excuses for not reading, solemnly my fault I get it. But hei! It's hard time for me! And reading slumps are not helping it much either!

First of the Wrap-up for the month of October.

The only book I've managed to get through is Brooding city, by Tom Shutt. And I've already rated it two out of five stars, because well:

"Didn't leave a good feeling at the end, I was confused, having trouble to understand what was happening. It looks like there are two stories in one book. Anyway, do fanfictions count as reading? Because hell I've read tons and tons of them, mostly with Mycroft, Sherly ummm Crowley and whole supernatural people. *blushes*

Moving onto the Bookhaul of November!!

Most of my books from October moved in here, I'm currently third way through Fangirl and I'm kind of liking it. Can't say I'm in love with the book because I'm tasting new waters here. This is a kind of books I've scarcely read before and still trying to process down of what is happening. 

Then there is halfway done Verne's Around the world in eighty days which is basically a compulsory read and it goes on slowwwly. It's only that I don't like many descriptions huddled up together and this is what this book is about. Mostly descriptions and lack of dialogues. But it can do, I found love in classics lately and will be reading more of them soon.

And lastly the books I have received from author! Which came with the amazing note of being accepted as permanent reviewer so I'm utterly happy and already quarter through the first book, because hell it's amazing. Angels and demons? Finally my kind of thing out of these books. *grins widely*

I hope that this month will be far more productive than the last one. My two babies (Crown of Midnight and Heir of fire) are patiently waiting till I can get to them. Yet a thought ran through my mind to buy the rest of the books in the series and have a quick marathon through out one weekend or the best would be through the Winter holidays! Oh yes..I need that right now....gotta go  back to procrastinating..yeah, now where was I in Assassin's creed? hmmm....oh yes killing a templar agent.

As I starter reading I had high expectations, because I am a lover of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and this clouded my judgement a bit, From the start to finish I was confused of what was happening. It was like two stories crammed together in one book, the constant jumping from one character to another was not helping at all. Yes, it is a short book, not more than 200 pages but it took me "ages" to read it till end. Also there were long sentences from start and it tired my mind. I'm not a native speaker of English, so I had to read some of them twice to grasp their meaning.
As for characters, i needed a while to get accustomed to the names. Brennan and Bishop were almost the same (both starting on B :P, my mind filling in the wrong names) and I  had trouble to actually know who is male and who female. Were I the author I would stick to the first names. I didn't quite see the character development in any of the characters, maybe only the slight difference in Jerremy actually accepting Sleepers were real.

Which brings me to another point. Who are the Sleepers? How did they come to be? What is their purpose? I lacked the background story. All you got in the book isn't enough, it leaves you guessing.

Recommendations? I don't know anyone who would want to read a detective story, but I guess ones liking other crimis would like it. The good thing at least was the fluidity and reality of the problem, the finding of the drug dealer.

I have to thank Booktubers for showing me this author. It's one of the best authors I have read so far. The storyline has a real catch to it, all the gods and traditions. She worked up hard to make sure that every detail is there.
The characters are so good! God I fell in love with Tamlin with the first mention of being fairie and not that beast. The flaws Feyre has and then catching up to her in the end! If I could I would not put the book down.

I have to say tho, I'm not much of a fan of first person POV, but...this book. This book proved me wrong! I didn't even mind the I much. I didn't concentrate on the point of view because there just wasn't enough space for it. You just had to concentrate on the plot. And the development of the characters the way they fell in love and then the action. SPEECHLESS! I'm literally speechless about this book. The only thing I can say about it : GO and BUY it!

This book is a freaking masterpiece! I bought only the first one because I didn't know the series and didn't want to invest bad, but now I regret not buying the rest! Blamey! I have no money either now, have to wait month. And then the waiting time for it to arrive, why we don't have such great books here in Slovakia, huh?
Anyway I'm going off the topic. The way it's written it keeps your mind focusing only on the story. Lot's of things are happening and you make your theories and then she ruins it all! with a twist! I couldn't put down the book, which haven't happened to me in years. so this deserves  straight 6/5 rating. No way I won't be buying the other four books.

The beginning was confusing and I had trouble with keeping up what is dream, memory or current time. Also the style of writing just didn't fit with me. Might be I didn't give it enough pages to grab me but it was more of a forced read so I put it down after fourth chapter.

I just wolfed down this book and I'm considering to buy the rest of the series, because this was freaking amazing. The plot twists and characters' development and all the information. My mind was blown away by the whole structure of the writing and one specific twist I don't want to tell you. It was unexpected really. Lori made a good job writing this and I bet that there is even more to come to.
Recommendation: Any age basically. There are fights, yes, but nothing too bloody. Go on read it! READ IT! 

The Ultimate Book Tag

1. Do you get sick while reader in the car?

Yes. As much as I hate it, I can't read in the car. I tried it in a coach while travelling to Italy from school but it didn't work either. So no reading to spend the time while travelling for me. But! I don't mind listening to music...(might swap it for books next time)

2. Which author's writing style is completely unique to you and why?

Um....that's a hard one. But I would say John Flanagan's. God his books are just amazing. oh oh and Dan Brown, geez, that man must be a god, have read every book he has ever written.

3. Harry Potter series or the Twilight Saga? Give 3 points to defend your answer.

Harry Potter! How could you even ask such thing?! First of all...it's much better written than Twilight Saga. Secondly I got bored of all the romance going on in there. And the WORLD! Have you seen sparkling vampires? Me neither.

4. Do you carry a book bag? If so, what's in it (beside books...)?

No. I have a backpack where I keep them. Besides...when I have school and too many (school)books I just carry my kindle  (love the thing, it's so lightweight) and read from there. 

And as mention I have there the schoolbooks, purse, keys, all the things student needs....(I want to finish the school already....but yay I got another 7 years...)

5. Do you smell your books?

Even tho I'm shy about it (meep) Don't tell anyone!

6. Books with or without little illustrations?

I think it's a nice touch to the book but it's not necessary for it. I mean...we all have our imagination right? And most of the times it happens I imagine things slightly different than they are pictured. (and I like my imagined picture more :p)

7. What book did you love while reading, but discovered later it wasn't quality writing?

I have no idea if I ever read such a book. (I've read so many and each one of them was amazing!) So...I  guess none?

Not that I remember, my childhood was kinda rough, moved twice, and the latter well...lost all my childhood stuff so I can't really relate to any books...it's saaaad I want them back I had so many... I just want my babies back.

Um...currently it's The Invisible Man as a matter of physical books. Don't have many because of all the moving and stuff, but slowly and surely I'm getting more (devil face)

The complete collection of Sherlock Holmes stories winning with 986 pages, BUT! at the same time I got that one there is this book The Hand of Fatima closely following with 961 pages.

11. Do you write as well as you read? Do you ever see yourself as a future author?

Yes I do write..I'm about to include that section to this blog as well so I can get (nope I'm not getting) rid of my old blog. But...um I wish I could write well, there is just no actual characters development through out my stories, need to work on that. Yet feel free to read what I have and leave your opinion. (God...why..why am I showing you this?)

12. When did you get into reading?

Um....when I learned how to read. I was constantly in the library, every break in school we had I was in library becoming bff with the librarian to be honest! Pity they moved her to another one. I miss her.

Um...that would be...most probably.. oh yes Sherlock Holmes for god's sake.

14. In school what was your best subject Language Arts or English?

First off..I have no idea what language arts teaches. Because Slovak schools have nothing of that, and English well....teach got mad at me because when she was teaching I was writing my stories...so yeah..neither as you could have guessed.

Well...maybe give it as a gift to someone other? Who knows maybe they would like the book. But surely I won't tell the giver that I don't like the book. Rude.

16. What is a lesser known series that you know of that is similar to Harry Potter or the Hunger Games?

Percy Jackson! Divergent, can be too I guess. And then...I'm lost....need to buy and read more books.

I don't know but I really like remorse. Even with its meaning I find it beautiful.

Absolutely spirits...one does not simply love werewolves and vampires at the same time. (get the reference? xD god it's getting late and this makes me silly.)

eaaaasyy. Vampires for sure. Zombies are just...stupid. Having no brain and all.

I'm a romantic so i'm sticking with forbidden love. What's better, eh?

24. Full romance books or action packed with a few love scenes mixed in.

Hmmm....I would go for the latter. But still i'm so unsure...there shouldn't be too much action... I'm 50/50 with action and romance in one book.

The book is about the little girl and her life during the second world war. Her name is Liesel Meminger and she is moved to her foster parents in Molching, Germany. Liesel goes through struggles of being poor, not being able to read, which is kind of an irony. But her foster father, Hans, the painter by trade, whom she is fond of teaches her how to read and write. So on she finds the joy of reading. The reading lessons start when she is waking up from nightmares at night, seeing her brother’s death all over and over. He teaches her the letters first. Later on he would read her the first stolen book out loud for her, The Gravedigger’s guide. When there were words she didn’t know, they would write them down on the wall in the basement. Soon enough the little girl has no struggle reading and her foster parents give her two books for Christmas, even though they are fighting the poverty. Her Papa exchanged them for cigarettes.

REVIEW ★★★★☆

It was divided into 11 in total, including the prologue and epilogue. It is a set of short stories included in it describing the life of the main character. What I find interesting is that the book is narrated by death. It was easy to read, thanks to the short sentences, so I had no trouble with understanding. Usually when it comes to long sentences I have to go back and re-read it to grasp the full meaning. The characters were well developed. To the very last details, including the inability to read by the main character, or the obsession with Jesse Owens by Rudy. Yet one thing stood out, which I didn’t like at all. The Death, apparently, finds joy in spoiling you the story before you even get to the mentioned part. 

I wouldn’t recommend the book for kids younger than 8 years, because of the violence that is going on in the book. Anyways it’s a book you can’t stop reading. (even though it took me some time, to be honest, because.. I had to watch Sherlock...yeah xP).

Rules are that the colored papers are books I have and didn't actually manage to read, the white papers are challenges, of 2015, which go as follows:

• Read a book with 500+ pages
• Reread a favorite book
• Read a 2015 debut novel
• Read a book that someone else picks
• Listen to an audiobook
• Read a book you DNF'd / gave up on
• Read a new-to-you author
• Read a book that is not a novel
• Read/watch a book and its adaptation
• Read an award winning novel
• Read a classic novel
• Read a series finale

Free books and then some

Everyone likes free books, right? And why not spread the word where to get them when it's cost free? 

So first of people who own Kindle are lucky, they get free books from Amazon, even when the paperbacks or hardbacks cost 14€. But fear not! There is also an app for android or ios called The kindle app . It's basically book reader for tablets and phones. Yet it's free and people on low budget like me might greatly appreciate it.
